Curry and Coco, les plus prometteuses épices de la région
Un album, le Printemps de Bourges, la « Musicale » de Canal+
Ressortez les shorts roses moulants et les lunettes surdimensionnées, les Lillois Curry and Coco sont prêts à nous en poudrer. Thomas Priem et Sylvain Przybyleski ont sorti leur premier album lundi, l'immodestement (mais ironiquement) baptisé We Are Beauty .
Dans leur mixeur, de la disco des années soixante-dix et de la new wave Joy Division. Ils qualifient leur mixture de « pop de dance », ou sorte de musique vintage, un peu kitsch mais diablement efficace pour remuer dans son latex.
Depuis trois ans, ils tournent dans toute l'Europe et affichent trois cents concerts au compteur. Mais outre quelques EP (maxis), aucun album n'était paru.
C'est fait et on le sent, autour d'eux, il y a un peu plus qu'un frémissement.
Vintage
Ce soir, début du banquet. Ils jouent au Printemps de Bourges sur une scène gratuite extérieure, au même titre que les déjà reconnus Minitel Rose ou Das Pop. La semaine prochaine, ils enregistrent la « Musicale » de Canal+ en tant que « coup de coeur » de la charmante Emma de Caunes et de l'immense Stéphane Saunier, monsieur musique sur la chaîne. L'émission sera diffusée le 28 juin avec pour stars annoncées Gaétan Roussel et Benjamin Biolay.
Dans la foulée, les Curry and Coco - « On a voulu le nom le plus handicapant du monde » - joueront cet été au Rock dans tous ses états à Évreux, aux Solidays à Paris et aux Francofolies de La Rochelle. Le magazine Les Inrocks les soutient : Pierre Siankowski, l'une des plumes du magazine référence et branché, a passé il y a peu une nuit à leurs côtés. Une chronique ou un peu plus devrait arriver.
Est-ce à dire que Curry and Coco est de la musique branchée, un ramdam aussi « hype » qu'éphémère ? On pourrait le penser si les deux compères avaient surfé sur une vague, posté deux ou trois sons sur le Web et avaient été dénichés par un assoiffé d'argent vite fait. Or, ils ont mis plusieurs années à construire leur musique en lien avec un réel univers. Hors du temps, très marqué par les années soixante-dix. Thomas raconte : « Les week-ends, je les passe sur des brocantes à dénicher des objets ou vêtements vintage. C'est moi. » C'est eux !
Sylvain et Thomas sont potes d'école primaire, ont commencé la musique au plus jeune âge. Sylvain le blond, clavier et chanteur, est originaire de Lens ; Thomas, le batteur et choriste, de Wattrelos. Ces Boys From The North, titre très Jean-Michel Jarre, revendiquent des valeurs. Travail : avant d'enregistrer ce disque avec David Kosten à Londres - qui a collaboré avec Bat for Lashes ou Chew Lips -, ils ont écumé bien des scènes où sont nés leurs morceaux. Et authenticité : « On n'utilise que des claviers et une batterie d'époque, sans séquence ni boucle. Sur scène, on donne énormément, on veut qu'il se passe un truc physique. » À vérifier le 23 avril au Grand Mix de Tourcoing, « la salle qui nous a faits ». Supportés même. Comme pour montrer que l'on peut être du Nord et chanter en anglais, être à la page voire tendance, ignorer Raoul, ne pas être déguisé et s'exporter à l'étranger. Un sillon ouvert et à creuser. •

How the hell could you live on so little?
Like I said: a lot of eggs ($0.79 a dozen), a lot of homemade soup, rice and beans, etc. I haven't bought meat in a couple months. Right now I've got a big batch of beef soup (supposed to be stew, but I thinned it out) in the fridge, but that's because my parents saw stew meat on sale and bought some for me. Also I bake my own bread, which saves a ton of money -- $1.50 per loaf > $1.50 per bag of flour.
I'd joke that wanting to lose weight helps, but it's kind of not funny anymore.
